Dr. Duane Shank

Dr. Duane Shank has been providing expert orthodontic care in Smithtown, New York since 1991. With decades of hands-on clinical experience, he is dedicated to helping both children and adults achieve healthy, confident smiles using the most advanced orthodontic techniques available.

Experience & Clinical Background

Dr. Shank began his dental career after earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He then served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, where he was assigned to the U.S. Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

During his military service, he gained extensive experience through specialty rotations in:

• Endodontics
• Prosthodontics
• Oral Surgery

Following his service, Dr. Shank practiced general dentistry for five years. This broad clinical foundation gives him a unique advantage in diagnosing and managing complex orthodontic cases that may require multidisciplinary care.

He later completed his specialty training in orthodontics in 1988 and has since devoted his career exclusively to orthodontic treatment.

Education & Academic Excellence

Dr. Shank earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, from Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. He was honored with the Sullivan Award for achieving the highest academic standing in the physical sciences, an early indicator of his commitment to excellence.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Shank contributes to the academic community as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at Stony Brook University, where he helps educate and mentor future orthodontists.
